HORIZONTAL ACTION [Rod Spillings/Todd Killings]
Jack, Lili, & FX go deeper into the dark corners of your brain where disco
dancing and obtuse punk noise collide with smeared lipstick and
French-fried boners. Who woulda guessed that SOLGER's "Raping Dead Nuns"
would ever cross into this territory (just the term, not the song itself,
but still...)? Unsettling electro rhythms under subtle vocal transmissions
that turn your stomach and pry their way into your heart with the
scathing, yet melodic, simplicity that has to be heard to be believed. How
this fits on In The Red is still yet to be determined, but regardless,
it's a bold new tangent that I'm not complaining about whatsoever.
Jackhammers, perverted drum machines and broken radios and torn labia and
deranged 'art' all come together to create a wonderful mess that leaves a
deep stain. Don't sit still and let it pass you by.

SDZ [Laurent Levy]
Un rapide tour au bar et c’est le set de Volt qui commence. Un trio qui sait se faire rare (un show par an sur Paris) pour mieux se faire désirer! Alors que Jacko commence à se mettre en jambes derrière le micro, on ne sait pas encore qu’ils vont donner leur meilleur concert à ce jour (c’était parait-il encore mieux à Berlin deux semaines plus tard). Autant le dire, Volt c’est l’electropunk dans ce qu’il a de meilleur. A l’extrême opposé du discopunk des pénibles Radio 4. Accords incisifs, effets de voix, sons synthétiques venus d’ailleurs, la potion magique. Au fur et à mesure que le set avance, les déhanchements énergiques de Jacko se multiplient, véritable miroir de l’envie de bouger qui nous gagne, créant un contraste extrême avec l’apparente concentration de Lili (guitare) et FX (synthé). On reconnaît « Couples », « I Like It », « Volt » et autres tubes du groupe et on découvre de nouveaux morceaux particulièrement percutants parmi lesquels ceux qui figureront sur leur prochain maxi 12’’, dont la parution sur In The Red est imminente. Très grand show, chapeau bas!


AGONY SHORTHAND [Jay Hinman]
VOLT : “COUPLES” 12”EP….Wide grooved and satisfying 45rpm darkwave from LILI Z. & JACK A., famous French garage punk lovebirds & former respective members of the NO-TALENTS and SPLASH FOUR, and their secret weapon “FX” on synthesizer and theremin. This guy’s no “Roland” – you can see his vein-poppin’ hand on the cover next to Jack & Lili’s. The four tracks here would be equally at home in the Paris dance nightclub as in the dank basement punk bar, with a synth-led electric charge that’s as often angry & aggressive as it is whimsical and fun. My favorite’s “86 Friends”, with an initial RED TRANSISTOR-like riff that devolves into Cabaret Voltaire loudly covering the Bauhaus version of “Third Uncle”. The loud attack just screams off of the vinyl. And you don’t get 45rpm 12” records too much any more, do you?

HORIZONTAL ACTION [Robbie Romeo]
The first post SPLASH FOUR band and we're all mesmerized and cauterized by the electronic mindfuck emitting from the speakers. It's deranged. It's making me itch with ecstacy, and if I hear Lili sing "I like it" one more time, I'm gonna lose it ! The way the guitar and electrodes interact is magical and if you've got any ounce of sel-respect, you'll put down your pants and find this record before it becomes as hard to find as my dick after a cold shower.

BOBTORTURE
Coole Sache das! Harte monotone Elektrobeats mit fetter Gitarre und eingängigem männlih/weiblichem Wechselgesang. Aber nix da "No Nave", denn die drei Gestalten kommen aus Frankreich und kümmern sich wahrscheinlich einen Scheiß um solche Labels. Am ehesten noch vergleichbar mit der "deutschen Schule" die sich zwischen Atari Teenage Riot, NDW-Pionieren (Plan, DAF) bewegt und dem was Kathleen Hanna derzeit mit Le Tigre macht, selbstverständlich aber alles mit Gitarre und einer frischen Portion spaßiger Aggressivität. Sehr genial das Ganze, extrem tanzbar und eben richtig fett. Alleine das Titelstück, in dem es um eben Paare geht, lohnt die Anschaffung ("... Adolf und Eva ..."). Mit "Volt!" (Volt ... Revolt!) gibt es einen weiteren Smasher, der diese Platte für alle, die es ein wenig elektronisch mögen, zu einem absoluten Muss macht!

Single of the week. Les trois salopards de VOLT, vieux briscards du punk-rock, enregistrés et mixés par Bosco, sont bien décidés à décoller des oreilles et à nous faire danser comme des damnés. Entre Peaches et Electronicat, comme une division de Panzer : la magie opère.

SDZ [Nicolas Mugnier]
"Couples", qui ouvre ce disque, a de quoi renvoyer Eurythmics à leurs doux rêves. Volt trippe sur les cauchemars. Attaques nocturnes et répétitives. Incessantes. Les martèlements industriels tiennent pour rythmique. La guitare reste tranchante et pratique les incisions avec précision. L'atmosphère est lourde et la violence bien froide sur ce "I like it", sorte de pop song 60's sauvagement rattrapée par le Malin. Les portes de l'usine s'ouvrent sur "86 Friends". Une étrange fête s'y déroule. Usinage complexe. Acier trempé et beautés glaçées. Automatisation du process, on laisse les jambes se délier. Inutile de chercher le bouton rouge pour tout arrêter. Volt fulmine avec son hymne éponyme. Une sorte de "Nag Nag Nag" diablement entêtant. Les consignes sont claires. Le choc sera brutal. Tout ça pour dire que le premier maxi 45t de ce trio parisien, né sur les cendres des Splash Four, est tout simplement dévastateur. Un croisement audacieux entre Suicide et Metal Urbain. C'est si rare une musique qui inspire. Avec Volt, on n'est pas prêt de souffler. 

Charlie Hebdo [Luz]
Parfois il suffit de peu pour se faire un nom... Un maxi par exemple. Les français de VOLT ont peu. Seulement un album de quatre titres. Suffisant pour imposer leur esprit néo-punk. Une fille gueule en sourdine sur une musique électronique minimale au tempo énergique et robotique...les experts parlent d'electroclash . Parlons de Rhaaaaaa Rock, sensuel, animal. Respire la sueur de VOLT et va baiser. Si les moines grégoriens hurlaient du VOLT, ça s'enfilerait sous les soutanes. On comprendrait enfin le secret de leurs voix de cristal.

New band from Lili, Jack, and FX of the Splash Four that sounds absolutely nothing like the Splash Four if that's what you're hoping for. This is even better. Lili's solo 10" from last year is a probable launching point for this project. I'm gonna tell you right now, this is some REAL electro-punk. Just synths, programmed drums, guitar, and vox, and it's more than enough to send most of these Neoteric synth-punk outfits running back to the suburbs from whence they came. It's dark It's mean. It's French. This disc seethes sex and violence through its pores. There are obviously some Metal Urbain influences at play here, and perhaps this is French punk coming full circle. I don't know, but I do know that this is exciting music that is certainly 100 times better than the Nazis from Mars. Four new-wave dance floor hits with a daring industrial edge: the scathing indictment of "Couples", the naughty innuendo of Lili's "I Like It" , the relentless tale of "86 Friends", and the searing theme that is "Volt!" . This disc should hit American shores any day now, so pay attention. I've already reserved a spot in this year's Top Ten.

Oh Oh, chroniquer l'ovni qui suit relève du coup tordu au redoutable examen de fin d"études de rock critic…de l'inhabituel quoi!…sur scène leur matos doit évoquer l'étalage d'un quincailler de Roswell sur Gognon (Groland d'en bas) : synthé, thérémine, synthé basse et tronant comme une incongruité au milieu de ce bric à brac électro, une guitare énorme aux trouées homériques…serait-ce, osons de l'after-garage? Après tout il y a 20 ans on parlait bien de post-punk? Ca a au moins le mérite d'englober large. Volt se promène donc dans un no-man's land electro-magnétique balisé par un Gary Numan sous MDMA d'un coté et le duo nancéen 80's Kas Product de l'autre. Guitares, zigouigouis et boites à rythme font bon ménage avec des voix sur un registre contrasté, blanc et noir. Filles et garçon (modernes?) Surprenant. Ah, j'oubliais, VOLT est un trio : Lili Z, Fx, JacK A. Qui a dit Splash Three?
